Welcome to Part 2 of the best music tech shops in New York.
You want modular? You’ve got modular…
This part accidentally focuses on modular synths for no other reason than a trip to Williamsburg brought with it three shops, all of which contained modular tech in varying degrees.
- MeMe Antenna
- Main Drag
This one wasn’t planned, just lucky . It’s an interior accessories store with a corner dedicated to modular synths and vinyl. An odd mix but great for me as the wife was happy browsing the store whilst I geeked out.
Main Drag was a nice surprise. A beautifully cavernous loft style space, nicely absent of the cacophony of noise you usually get from your average music store. You get the feeling touring pro’s would pop in here to pick something up.
The shop caters for all with an emphasis on guitars but the synth selection wasn’t bad with some analogue and newer treats on display. As you’ll see from the pics, a nice little modular set up was ready to play too.
Bizarrely this was where I saw my second Optigan of my trip, that being the keyboard I learnt to play on. The gods are telling me something.
I was hoping my visit here would end up with my credit card being hammered on a basic modular set up but unfortunately it was not to be. Not due to lack of toys, but I was given a fantastic demo of various pieces and it made me realise I need to research (a lot) more before jumping in. The advice was top notch and although the shop is small, CONTROL is a must visit if you’re into mods.
That’s all folks. It’s nearly time to head back to the UK.
Thanks again to all those that I chatted to.
Where should I visit next?
